If one person voices this concern, chances are several others are thinking the same thing but hesitate to speak up. This isn't just relevant for public speaking situations. It touches on broader social practices that are often accepted without question. Sometimes, as a society, we become attached to practices that aren't necessarily beneficial, evidence-based, or even helpful. My go-to example of this is requiring low-wage retail and food service workers to stand for entire shifts. While standing might offer some benefits in specific tasks or improve reaction times, it overlooks the many health conditions and disabilities that make prolonged standing difficult and painful. Policies that mandate standing can lead to increased reports of lower back pain, fatigue, muscle pain, leg swelling, cardiovascular issues, and complications during pregnancy (CDC 2014). Another problematic practice deeply ingrained in workplace and customer service culture is the use of gendered honorifics like "Sir" or "Ma'am." Many employers, especially in regions like the Deep South of the United States, mandate these terms when addressing customers or clients. But where do these honorifics come from, and are they truly helpful or potentially harmful? The most crucial aspect of this discussion involves gender minorities. These are individuals who don't identify strictly as male or female. However, it's not just about them. Many cisgender people also express discomfort with these honorifics. If using "Sir" and "Ma'am" alienates even 5-10% of an audience, that's a significant number of people who might become automatically resistant to the message simply due to the use of gendered language.
