I learned about what was happening, as a former LGBT homeless individual in the United States. I connected to several of the refugees over Facebook. Many people there have cell phones, with wireless internet access in parts of the camp. Kakuma has an informal economy and is one of the largest refugee camps in the world. A few years ago there was legislation passed making homosexuality illegal in Uganda. Many of the people I connected with were fluent in English because it is the dominant colonial language in Uganda. However there are Gay and Transgender refugees from many surrounding countries. Sending US dollars directly to vetted refugees for community support has been a worthwhile risk, and every dollar goes a very long way. Many people in Kakuma do not have bank accounts, but access money services through MPESA on cell phones. MPESA is a financial service that allows the sending of money instantly through text message and is lifting people out of poverty in Kenya.
