Great Tide Rising: The Moral Urgency of Climate Action

Based on the writings and a lecture from Dr. Kathleen Dean Moore

Our Responsibility to Future Generations

The choices we make today will shape the world our grandchildren inherit. Will we leave them a planet ravaged by climate change and social injustice, or will we create a just and sustainable world? This decade is pivotal, and the story we write now will determine the future.

Our grandchildren will want to know what happened during this critical time. They will ask if it was an era of chaos and violence or one of hope and progress. Did we do everything in our power to protect the environment and ensure a livable planet? Our actions today will answer these questions.

We must ensure that our grandchildren inherit a habitable Earth and that they can look back on this decade with pride. We are the authors of our future, and our choices will determine whether our story is one of hope or despair, love or greed, cooperation or destruction.

The only story that can truly change the world is a story of love—the most potent force in the universe. Love can conquer any obstacle and is our ultimate salvation. We must choose love, cooperation, and hope to navigate these challenging times.

The love I felt for my granddaughter as I held her by the pond was a love that could move mountains. It was a love that could make the impossible possible, a love that could save the world. This is the kind of love we need to overcome the challenges ahead, heal our wounds, and build a better future for all generations.

We must protect the beauty of the world for our children and grandchildren. It’s not enough to simply wish them well; we must actively safeguard the environment and the systems that sustain life. We need a fierce and unwavering love that will defend what we cherish and ensure it’s not lost to future generations.

The choice is ours. Let’s choose intergenerational equity, a future where our grandchildren inherit a world they can thrive in. Let’s write a story of love, hope, and cooperation—a story that will make our grandchildren proud.
