"Are We Witnessing the Birth of a New Collective Spirituality?"
I just spent the last year and change watching tens of thousands of children, women, men, be ruthlessly slaughtered by Israel, livestream on the internet. In my region of the United States, we lived through a geologic event that has decimated our watershed and ground soil, decimating lives, homes, and previously thriving business districts. It's like the type of damage to human life, ecology, and systems, while incomparable in scale to each other, were the same. One has aircrafts dropping water, ready to eat meals, and rescue missions, and the other situation is dropping massive bombshells onto mass populated sometimes ancient civilization.
Wasn't Christianity started by the bearing of witness of the martyring of a prophet? We are seeing that today, over the internet, happen to tens of thousands of people, and those same people choosing to embrace All-h and life. Rebuilding with a tenacity previously unimaginable to the non-believing class of humanity.
What happens when the world watches, in real time, as tens of thousands are slaughtered, ecosystems obliterated, and ancient civilizations reduced to rubble? Livestreamed atrocities—like those in Gaza—are not just geopolitical events; they are spiritual ruptures. Historically, religions have emerged from the ashes of collective trauma: Christianity from the martyrdom of Jesus, Islam from the prophetic struggle against injustice. Today, we face a parallel catalyst: the internet has globalized witness. We are no longer bystanders to distant suffering; we are forced participants in a shared moral reckoning.
This isn’t about a "new religion" in the traditional sense. It’s about a _movement_—one that transcends dogma, weaving together the disillusioned of all faiths and none. Its foundation? The unbearable weight of collective grief and the defiant choice to protect life anyway.
What Might This Movement Embody?
1. Ruthless Compassion: Not the hollow "pro-life" of political slogans, but a militant commitment to shielding the vulnerable from systemic violence—whether from bombs, environmental collapse, or carceral states. 2. Communal Over Individual: A rejection of luxury as distraction, and individualism as isolation. Survival demands interdependence and working together. 3. Grief as a Catalyst: Space for mourning what’s lost—lives, ecosystems, trust in power—without sanitization. 4. Accountability as Sacred: No more impunity for war criminals, polluters, or architects of austerity.
5. Healing of the World: And an active unraveling of our carceral and deadly political systems rooted in justice, love, and defense of the divine.
6. Technology Reorientation: Finding ways to hold onto pockets of Scientific advancements in technology that make our lives better, but are more responsible to the natural world and to each other.
The internet’s horror-show has stripped away illusions. If humanity survives this era, it will be because we forged a spirituality of _action_—one that honors the martyrs of Gaza, the Congo, and every silenced crisis by dismantling the systems that created them.
